Starting her next chapter: a path to independence

A new door. A fresh start. A place to call home.
When “Maya” first came to Onward, she had recently turned 18. She was figuring out her next steps—and what stability could look like for her future.
A little over a year later, she moved into her own apartment. She's moving forward with the confidence, direction, and skills to live on her own.
During her time at Onward, Maya began finding her voice.
“I can speak up for myself now.”
That growth showed up in real, life-changing ways. She graduated from high school. She got her driver’s license, a car, and car insurance—steps that helped her live on her own. She recently earned her Personal Care Assistant (PCA) certification and found a new PCA job.
Maya worked closely with her program manager. Together, they worked through things like healthcare, job searches, and daily responsibilities.
Onward program manager Crystal reflected on Maya’s time in the program. She shared,
"She achieved 100% of the goals she set during her time at Onward."
That growth is also evident in Maya’s own words from her aftercare application:
“My time at Onward House has helped me become more independent and responsible. I've learned how to manage my time, stay organized, and take care of daily responsibilities. I've also improved my communication and when to ask for help. The skills I've learned like budgeting, cleaning, and managing my responsibilities will help me maintain my own home.”
Onward provided more than a place to live. It helped her build stability, stay on track, and develop the skills to live on her own long-term.
When asked how likely she would be to recommend Onward to others, Maya didn’t hesitate:
“10 out of 10. It’s very helpful, and I’m glad I found it. You keep finding ways to make it better.”
Now, as she steps into this next chapter, her reflection is simple:
“I feel more grown up.”
This is the impact: a young adult builds a stable, independent life—with a job, transportation, life skills, and confidence.
