Inside Onward House: Reflections from our Open House

By Tricia Wright

More than 50 people — including supporters, volunteers, community partners, and first-time visitors — joined us on May 5 for Onward’s annual Open House in Eden Prairie. We were grateful for the opportunity to welcome guests into the home to learn more about Onward’s mission and the young adults we serve.

Throughout the evening, guests moved through stations around the house staffed by Onward board members and leaders. Each station highlighted a different part of Onward’s work and gave visitors a chance to hear stories, ask questions, and experience the heart of the program through conversation and connection.

The core message of the evening was simple:

Stable housing paired with consistent support can change the trajectory of a young person’s life.

Guests learned about many different aspects of Onward’s work, including:

  • Affordable housing for young adults ages 18–24

  • Individualized support and goal setting with our program manager

  • Monthly house meetings focused on life skills and community

  • Aftercare services that help extend support beyond a resident’s time in the home

  • Plans to grow and serve more young people in the future

Visitors also heard stories of growth and independence. Staff and volunteers shared examples of residents graduating from high school, building savings, gaining employment, learning independent living skills, and moving into their own apartments.

While we forgot to capture photos during the event itself, we’re sharing a few recent photos of the home so those who weren’t able to attend can still get a glimpse inside Onward House.

One thing guests often notice when they visit is how personal and welcoming the home feels. Residents help shape the spaces they live in — from artwork and decorations to the overall feel of the home — with support from Onward’s program manager and Onward volunteers. Creating spaces that feel safe, comfortable, and personal is an important part of helping young adults feel a sense of stability and belonging.

A big part of the evening focused on community and belonging. From house meetings to volunteers helping prepare rooms and care for the home, guests saw how many people play a role in creating a safe, welcoming environment for young adults.

Thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered, donated, and helped make the evening meaningful. We left feeling grateful for the strong community surrounding Onward and hopeful about the future for the young people living at Onward House.
