The power of belonging — what it takes to end youth homelessness

During one session at the Minnesota Coalition for the Homeless Conference, a panelist reflected on what prevents young people from falling back into homelessness. Their words stayed with us: “Belonging is prevention.”

That insight underscored a core truth: prevention isn’t only about housing access, but about human connection. When a young person feels seen, supported, and safe, they are less likely to return to crisis.

Many young adults experiencing homelessness have never had that one steady adult — the teacher, mentor, or neighbor who believed in them. Without that, it’s hard to imagine stability.

At Onward, relationships are at the heart of everything we do. We walk alongside residents as they navigate school, work, and healing. We celebrate milestones, support through setbacks, and stay connected after they move out.

The continuum of care — from crisis shelters to transitional housing to affordable homes — only works when paired with belonging. Shelter saves lives. Housing ends homelessness. But belonging helps people thrive.

This reflection is part of Onward’s five-part series, “Seeing what’s hiddenyouth homelessness in Minnesota,” drawing from insights shared at the 2025 Minnesota Coalition for the Homeless Conference. Continue reading to explore how communities across Minnesota can see what’s hidden — and help young people find safety, stability, and belonging.
